Size is Just A Number
The size on a garment tag can be a trigger. How can is not be when, in past times, magazines proudly sold issues with the headlines “Drop a Dress Size in 4 WEEKS” or “How to be a Size 0”? Yuck.
Size is just a number. It is not a determinant of your self worth, beauty or fitness. Whilst it can be used as a good starting point if you are selecting pieces from a rack, you want to be happy and comfortable with how a garment fits on YOUR body. It doesn’t matter if you’re in a size 6 or a size 14.
With no regulation, clothing sizes are actually akin to the Wild West. It’s no holds barred, do as you like, cowboy! This is why you may be a size 12 in one store and a size 8 in another.
You want to focus on fit when shopping for clothes or deciding whether to keep or toss a current piece.
Ask yourself how YOU like your clothes to fit, whether the item you are trying on is sitting correctly on your body and how it makes you feel.
Sometimes sizing up or down can drastically change how we feel in a garment and how it looks.
More often than not, models in campaigns are wearing sizes that are larger than their standard size in order to achieve the fit and aesthetic the stylist wants to achieve.
Once you let go of the number on the tag, and focus on the fit of the piece instead, you begin to take control of your personal style and think differently about your clothes.
Aura’s Personal Styling Packages will empower you with the tools you need to dress with confidence, express your individuality and shop mindfully.

IN THE KNOW
CONTENT WE’RE LOVING THIS WEEK
#1 WE’RE READING - Bridget Jones’ Diary by Helen Fielding Bridget Jones’ Diary doesn’t need much of an introduction. An iconic novel before it was an iconic film, we decided we wanted to give this novel a read after listening to a podcast episode of Book Chat on the novel. Hilarious, light hearted, and filled with classic British wit, we are loving this novel (which we borrowed from our local library). It certainly fits the description of “an oldie but a goodie”. |
#1 WE’RE LISTENING TO - Ready for Absolutely Nothing by Susannah Constantine on Audible The other half of the iconic What Not to Wear duo, Susannah Constantine’s memoir offers an enthralling look at the lifestyles of England’s upper class and a journey of self-discovery. It’s difficult to believe you aren’t reading a Jane Austen novel in the first pages, as Constantine shares stories about her childhood and her quest to “find a husband”. She does quite well for herself by dating Princess Margaret’s son for 6 years, attending Royal lunches and balls and even, holidaying on the island of Mustique. Filled with scandalous stories, Constantine is not afraid to make fun of herself as she looks back on her childhood and career, examines her privileged upbringing and reflects on her life thus far. Her “no bull shit” tone and disarming honesty make you feel like you are at a riveting, rosé filled lunch with a woman you can learn absolutely everything from. |
#3 WE’RE WATCHING - Shrinking on Apple TV Paul (Jason Segel) a grieving therapist, jettisons his training and ethics and decides to tell his clients exactly what he thinks and makes tumultuous changes to their lives, and his, in the process. Segel delivers a brilliant performance in a role that is different to anything we’ve seen him in before. Supported by Harrison Ford, Jessica Williams, Christa Miller, Luke Tennie, Michael Urie, and Lukita Maxwell, Shrinking made us laugh, cry and want to shake Paul through the screen. Thanks to our friend, Elle, for reminding us about this series. We can’t believe we haven’t recommended it yet. It is definitely in our top 10 most loved series. |
The Empower Personal Styling Package includes a Wardrobe Cleanse and Personal Shopping experience. Under our Empower Package, I will:
By the end of our sessions, you’ll have a clear understanding of your personal style, wear more of what you own, shop less and reduce those waisted purchases. Most importantly, you’ll feel confident, powerful and be able to get dressed with ease and confidence no matter the occasion. | - LEOPARD PRINT - Leopard print is a rising trend for Autumn/Winter (We never knew it left to be honest). Most notably, in jeans (These from Damson Madder have gone viral). We are firm believers that leopard print is a neutral and have pulled out leopard print pieces out of our wardrobe ready for the #aurastyleprompt this week! Whether you go double leopard a la Trinny Woodall, a pop of the print in your shoes or belt or donne a stylish leopard print gilet, let go leopard this week.
